Red Rocks Past
About 600 million years ago Red Rock started forming. It was located underneath an ocean basin where it deposited 9,000 feet of sediment! Dinosaurs also play a part in Red Rock Canyon's history. The tracks of two-footed, meat-eating, dinosaurs have been found in the Aztec Sandstone at Red Rock Canyon in three different places. Professional Paleontologists are still researching these sites to this day.
Fast forward a bit to where the modern springs provided an abundance of plants and animals to the members of Southern Paiute, Virgin Anasazi, & Paleoarchaic peoples. Animals hunted and harvested included desert tortoise, rabbits, bighorn sheep, mule deer, quail, and more. Pinyon pine nuts, manzanita fruits, prickly pear cactus fruits, agave hearts, yucca fruits, and many other plants were used as food & medicine sources.
